Where, What, Why and How of Industrial Surge Protection

Surge protection system is designed to absorb voltage spikes caused by electrical storms (or out-of-spec utility power), and effectively allow the surge to bypass power wiring and your equipment.

Modern technology has progressed to the point where detecting and preventing surges has become an exact science. Many insurance companies now insist on custom designed office surge protection systems.

Where does a surge come from?
The major of electronics damage from surge is caused by lightning strikes. The most damage is often not caused by direct lightning strikes, but is the result of transient voltage and current surges induced on power, telecommunications or RF transmission lines by the strong electromagnetic fields created during a lightning strike. Other common causes of power surge are the operation of high-power electrical devices, such as elevators, air conditioners and refrigerators by switching on-off compressors and motors.

What is surge protection?
These are devices whose purpose is to eliminate transients on a conductor which are induced by nearby lightning activity. They are used to prevent damage to valuable electronic equipment from these high-voltage surges and spikes.

How is a surge protection device used?

Surge protector diverts the excess voltage and current from transient or surge into grounding wire and prevents it from flowing through the electrical and electronic equipments while at the same time allowing the normal voltage to continue along its path. This excess energy can cause damages in electrical and electronic equipment, process control instruments & equipment. For example, they are used in line between devices such as antennas and amplifiers and radios or between connections on Ethernet switches and routers. They are connected via copper cabling (Coaxial, UTP etc.)

Why do we need surge protection?

Nowadays a lot of electronic components in modern electrical devices are much smaller, delicate and more sensitive to current increases. Microprocessor which is an integral part of all computers and many modern electrical equipment, are particularly sensitive to surge. Electrical equipment can be exposed to damaging surges from AC power line and telephone or signal lines.
Surge protector is suitable to use in every applications that connect to electricity (the utility power supplies or the locally generated), telephone lines (such as modem, fax, data, etc.), computer data lines and communication lines, etc.

Surge protection devices meet every industry’s requirements, regardless of the exposure risk. They help reduce costly downtime and protect sensitive electronic equipment against the damaging effect of lightning.
